Gavins Point Dam Structural Movement Survey
near Yankton, South Dakota

Gavins Point Dam is the most-downstream dam of the Missouri River system dams. The Omaha District of the US Army Corps of Engineers commissioned Eisenbraun and Associates to perform a structural monitoring survey of Gavins Point Dam, which is located on the Missouri River near E/A’s home office in Yankton, South Dakota.
The E/A Approach
Vertical movement was determined on fourteen gate structures on the downstream spillway piers and walls. This required that equipment be lowered by rope down to the movement point on the nose piers through access manholes. An electronic digital level was used to record measurements to the nearest 0.001-foot. Horizontal movement on the downstream spillway piers and walls was determined by multiple distances measured with a total station to all control points on the piers and walls.
The Outcome
The final report of the spillway structure included: a commentary on the survey procedures used and results, tabulation sheets of the vertical and horizontal movement observed, level circuit notes from the electronic digital level data collector, level circuit closure reports, and total station field notes.
