Red River of the North Hydrographic Survey
Red River of the North south of Fargo, North Dakota

Eisenbraun and Associates was commissioned by the St. Paul District Corps of Engineers to perform hydrographic and overbank surveys on 20 miles of the Red River south of Fargo, North Dakota. The river stage was exceptionally high at the time of the survey and severely hampered accessibility. Hydrographic cross sections at pre-designated locations were to be extended beyond the top of the normal channel bank.
The E/A Approach
GPS was used to establish control and to provide horizontal positioning for the hydro work, but due to dense vegetation and tree cover, total stations were necessary to survey the overbank portion of the cross sections. Prior to beginning the cross section surveys, extensive site reconnaissance was necessary to locate existing horizontal and vertical control, and to establish the location of the transects. GPS was used to establish North Dakota State Plane Coordinates (south zone) on all control points throughout the site by tying to published horizontal control stations in the area. Trimble 4400 and 4000 SSE receivers were used during this project. Differential level circuits were run from recovered NAVD 88 benchmarks to on-site points to establish vertical control on the project.
Additional services requested within the scope of work on this project required E/A crews to perform hydrographic and overbank surveys of several areas on the Red River of the North within the city limits of Fargo. These sections of the river had experienced severe bankline erosion that was threatening developments along its banks.
The Outcome
The data for both portions of the work were needed very quickly, and E/A crews provided a rapid delivery of the data to the St. Paul District Corps of Engineers.
