Missouri River Hydrographic Survey

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District

The Kansas City District Corps of Engineers contracted with Eisenbraun and Associates to provide a hydrographic survey of 500 miles of the Missouri River from its confluence with the Mississippi River at St. Louis to the Nebraska border.  The survey data were to be used to create or update hydrographic survey maps, electronic navigation charts and a digital terrain model of the river.

The E/A Approach

Thorough planning by the E/A project team was necessary prior to mobiliizing crews to the field in order to achieve the efficiencies that would be necessary to achieve the aggressive project goals.  The project was laid out using the HyPACK software suite that the firm's hydrographic surveyors use both in the office and field.  Cross sections were obtained at 250 foot intervals, resulting in a total of approximately 11,600 full channel transects.  Spacing of the points along each cross section in the final dataset was provided at a 2-foot interval.  All work was to be completed by mid-October, a very short time frame to complete a hydrographic survey of this magnitude considering that work could not be started until the beginning of August.  Two crews were committed full time to the project, with a third survey boat assisting for a period of time as well.  The survey data files were transmitted electronically back to our offices on a daily basis for editing and processing.

The Outcome

Thanks to relatively good weather and river conditions and an exceptional effort by the survey crews, the firm was able to complete the field survey in the allotted time and went on to deliver the final product one month ahead of deadline.
