East Cornerstone Project
City of Yankton, South Dakota

The City of Yankton, South Dakota identified crucial improvements that needed to be made within its transportation infrastructure. The East entrance to the city of Yankton via the heavily trafficked SD Highway 50 consisted not only of a rough industrial appearance, but also crossed two inefficient and potentially dangerous intersections at the east entrance to the City.
The E/A Approach
Eisenbraun and Associates proposed the East Cornerstone Project to the City – a project that would combine the efforts of the firm’s own engineering capabilities working cooperatively with the SD Department of Transportation. Through E/A’s preliminary and final design work, surveying, and construction monitoring, two dangerous intersections along the busy highway were re-aligned into a four-way intersection with traffic signals. An additional and safer intersection south of Highway 50 was also added to create easier access to downtown Yankton. Keeping in mind the City’s wish to create a more aesthetically pleasing entrance into town, E/A initiated plans to integrate sidewalks, trails, signage, and landscaping from the East Cornerstone Project with the new Auld-Brokaw trail in Yankton. A new trailhead for the recreational Auld-Brokaw trail was designed along with a parking lot and proper storm drainage system.
The Outcome
E/A brought an all-encompassing perspective to the East Cornerstone project. Highway 50 is now more efficient, giving larger turning radii to commercial trucks and clearer markings for all traffic. By listening to the City’s concerns and goals for improvement while successfully involving the work of the SD DOT, E/A spearheaded a project that created a safer and more attractive looking entrance to the city.
