Auld-Brokaw Trail Project
City of Yankton, South Dakota

Historically, Marne Creek posed a continuous flooding threat to the city of Yankton, South Dakota. The creek sharply weaved its way through the heart of the city. Businesses, homes, and schools were at risk of flooding, as they lined the un-checked creek’s edge. In addition, overgrown brush and trees choked off much of the creek and diminished its hydraulic capacity. The City of Yankton hoped to not only control the flooding of Marne Creek, but also somehow integrate the creek into the community’s system of recreational areas.
The E/A Approach
Eisenbraun and Associates contracted with the city to expand upon flood mitigation efforts to transform Marne Creek from a liability to a valuable asset. A successful flood control project was now to evolve into a 50-acre linear park/pedestrian trail project. Sparked by a donation from Tom Brokaw and his wife, Meredith Auld, the project known as the Auld-Brokaw Trail along Marne Creek began to grow with the design and direction of E/A. E/A’s role in the project consisted of working closely with the City of Yankton on the development of plans as well as monitoring construction. Engineers at E/A looked to integrate existing bike paths and sidewalk loops into the new trail to be built along Marne Creek. Consequently, several city parks, Yankton High School and its Arboretum Trail, trails extending to Lewis & Clark Lake recreational area, and Paddlewheel Point on the Missouri River were all connected to the Auld-Brokaw Trail.
The Outcome
Previous to the Auld-Brokaw Trail project, Marne Creek was an unsightly flooding threat to the Yankton community. With the completion of the project, Yankton residents and tourists now enjoy a new linear park and paved trail that includes lighting, trailheads, rest areas, native grasses and wildflowers. E/A helped the City uncover a hidden asset running right through the community.
