Riverside Park Development

City of Yankton, South Dakota

The City of Yankton commissioned Eisenbraun and Associates to provide the civil engineering expertise for the redevelopment of Riverside Park along the Missouri River near the historic downtown district of Yankton. The project included the design of a new boat ramp and docks, a fishing pier, bike trails, access roads, road removal, the development of three parking lots, storm drainage, water distribution lines, and an underground irrigation system. The project time frame was extraordinarily tight due to the desire to complete construction prior to the upcoming tourist season. In order to take advantage of low flows in the Missouri River, an early December design date was requested for all project components.

The E/A Approach
E/A recommended that the boat ramp, approach roads, and fishing pier be designed first to keep the project on schedule and to take advantage of river conditions. Plans were forwarded to the US Army Corps of Engineers for design approval just one month following the initial contact made by the City. Additionally, the design of all items in the project was completed during the next 35 days. E/A employees and City staff needed to work together under intense time pressure to keep this important project for the community on track.

The Outcome
The objectives of the Riverside Park Development were met on schedule and within budget, and have resulted in one of the most heavily used parks within the City of Yankton. Riverside Park is now the focal point of the annual Riverboat Days celebration that draws approximately 100,000 people to Yankton each August. The Riverside Park Development received the honor of “Outstanding Achievement in Park Design and Development” by the South Dakota Parks and Recreation Association.
