Alumax Road Realignment Project
Yankton, South Dakota
Alcoa Extrusions, a former major employer of area residents, was experiencing healthy growth and was developing plans to expand their plant. The plant, however, was landlocked by existing roads leaving no alternatives for plant expansion. The City of Yankton, in cooperation with Alcoa and Yankton County, engaged Eisenbraun and Associates to provide a solution to this problem.
The E/A Approach
Eisenbraun and Associates proposed an alternative route for Alumax Road which would relocate the road and allow for the needed expansion of the plant to the south. Relocating the road also necessitated relocating a 12” waterline, 15” sanitary sewer line, and a host of other utilities.
Eisenbraun and Associates worked with the City of Yankton through the preliminary and final design phases, surveying and construction monitoring to provide the finished roadway alignment. The project also involved the construction of approximately eleven acres of industrial lots and storm water management in the form of two retention ponds constructed on site. E/A coordinated design and construction activities with two major gas lines that run through the area, one that was owned by Kaneb Pipeline and the other owned by Northern Natural Gas.
The Outcome
The project, consisting of transportation, water, sewer, and storm water management as well as coordination of other utility relocations, provided the room necessary for a southern expansion of the manufacturing plant and provided the City with commercial lots available for future industrial and commercial development.
