Marne Creek Flood Mitigation and Greenbelt Project
Yankton, South Dakota

For many years the City of Yankton had been investing significant money and efforts in addressing flood risks posed by Marne Creek. Using funds obtained from FEMA, the Marne Creek Flood Mitigation project was aimed at minimizing flood damages while maximizing recreational, cultural/historic, aesthetic, environmental, and economic development opportunities.
The E/A Approach
Eisenbraun and Associates (E/A) teamed up with Olsson Environmental of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ciaccio Dennel Group of Omaha, Nebraska, to provide the City of Yankton with a comprehensive study and design of the Marne Creek Greenbelt.
The project began with an extensive clean up effort. This phase of the work included clearing and grubbing of undesirable vegetation and appropriate thinning of native trees and shrubs. Construction continued with the development of a maintenance/recreation trail throughout the entire project length and construction of bank stabilization structures at critical locations.
The Outcome
The 1.4 million dollar FEMA grant that was used to help fund this project is transforming the Marne Creek Greenbelt into a functional, safe and pleasing corridor that ties together many different sectors of the community. The Marne Creek Flood Mitigation project has, in turn, laid the groundwork for another E/A project, the Auld Brokaw Trail project.
