Gregory County Transfer Station
Gregory County, South Dakota
Gregory County officials wished to attain a low maintenance, municipal waste handling facility capable of operating with minimal overhead costs. Eisenbraun and Associates provided design and construction management services for the Gregory County Municipal Solid Waste Transfer Station adjacent to the existing Gregory County Landfill east of Burke, South Dakota.
The E/A Approach
Eisenbraun and Associates designed the on-site access road and the reinforced concrete foundation, floor, and retaining walls for the building. A split-level 40 foot x 60 foot pre-engineered steel frame building was utilized to provide a durable and cost effective structure. Notable features of the building include a tipping area where waste materials are dumped directly into a transfer trailer parked on the lower level area, and a clear space adjacent to the tipping area with two truck level docks for recycling activities. An integral leachate containment system located in the lower level captures potential contaminants for responsible disposal at an approved location. Three-phase electrical service and domestic water are provided to the building for operational requirements. Several Gregory County Highway Department operations are also located at this general site.
The Outcome
Competitive construction bids were opened for this project. The project was completed and approved by Gregory County for a cost of $214,000. Road construction and preliminary site excavation activities were accomplished by the Gregory County Highway Department to meet the local match portion of project grants. The funding sources for this project included South Dakota Solid Waste and CDBG grant monies. The facility remains vital to the county’s waste management today.
