Turner County Dairy
Turner County, South Dakota
Increasingly stricter environmental standards have been required of dairy operations in recent years. In order to meet the higher standards, dairy operators, such as the owners of Turner County Dairy near Parker, South Dakota, have come to Eisenbraun and Associates to provide permitting, design, and construction specifications to update their operations.
The E/A Approach
The Turner County Dairy project exemplifies the expertise Eisenbraun and Associates brings to modern large-scale dairy operations. Turner County Dairy was designed and built in an H-style configuration; each steel-frame barn houses 780 head each. Each free-stall contains a rubber-filled pillow covered by a mattress liner and bedded with straw for maximum cow comfort. Automatic scrapers clean the alleys eight times a day. An exception barn is behind the holding area and used for calving and treating cows. The parlor is a double 28 parallel. Cows are milked three times each day; when fully populated, the parlor runs 21 hours a day. Two clay lined holding ponds, each with a capacity of 9 million gallons, are used for manure storage. The holding ponds are emptied each fall. The nutrients are knifed into the surrounding farm ground to serve as crop fertilizer. E/A’s agricultural engineering approach centers upon quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
The Outcome
By the end of design and construction, the Turner County Dairy operation successfully met the requirements for operations set by the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources. At full capacity, Turner County Dairy employs 25 people, houses 1,600 milking cows and 300 dry cows, and produces the equivalent of approximately 224,000 eight-ounce glasses of milk per day – all within new, stricter environmental standards.
